Bio in thirty words: Sheena Koops teaches at Bert Fox Community High School, and has taught in urban, First Nations and rural Saskatchewan within private, band, and public schools. She is a published author.
Little longer Bio: In grade one Sheena wrote a story about a purple pony, and in grade nine – the same year she decided to become a teacher – she wrote a short story from the perspective of a table tennis ball. Writing became a little more serious in university, and then while teaching middle years, Sheena thought, “Hey, I could write one of these novels. They’re so short.” Ten frustrating and exhilarating years later, her first book is scheduled for release with Orca Books in the fall f 2006.
More Bio: Writing has always been a big part of Sheena’s teaching: journals, creative writing, writing-to-learn, and writing workshop. Sheena has taught school in urban, First Nations and rural Saskatchewan within private, band, and public schools, and currently teaches English at Bert Fox Community High School. She is using narrative and poetics in her master’s thesis tentatively called: Blue Eyes Remembering Toward Anti-racist Pedagogy, and her first young adult book Voice of the Valley is scheduled for release with Orca Book Publishers in the fall of 2006.
Still More Bio:
Sheena Koops’ fondest memories include horses and table tennis which filled her childhood on the farm near Macoun, with her parents Bill and Mary Muirhead. Sheena married Michael Koops in 1989 and together they pursued careers in education. The Koops’ have worked in urban, First Nation and rural Saskatchewan within the private, band and public school systems. They have both just finished their Master of Education Degrees while teaching at Bert Fox Community High School in Fort Qu’Appelle. Sheena serves as Writing Coach for Sister Triangle Magazine, and as a board member of Western Christian College and High School. Sheena and Michael agree that their favourite accomplishments are three girls: Victoria, age 11; Moira, age 9; and Arwen, age 4. The Koops’ live in the beautiful Qu'Appelle Valley.
